How do Local Authorities easily increase their recycling rates from the domestic paper stream?
Easy; incorporate all types of paper, cardboard and paper based packaging ! This can also include directories, junk mail and envelopes. Indeed, Smurfit Kappa Recycling have been recycling Yellow Pages for over ten years and were among the first UK organisations to be able to take these directories as part of a Mixed Paper kerbside or bring bank scheme. The volume of paper collected from householders by including all of these materials can be increased by up to 10%.
Additionally, collecting the Mixed Paper grade as your source segregated paper stream not only maximises the amount of paper that can be recovered but vastly improves cleanliness and quality - ensuring acceptability at the Paper Mill. Poor quality paper will often have to transported further than is necessary, to be re-sorted and cleaned up - thus adding to costs and environmental impact.
